9 THINGS YOUR LASH STYLIST WANTS YOU TO KNOW

1.  Lash Extensions/Technicians are not made equal

There are many lash brands, and manufacturers out there. Like any beauty product, there is luxury grade,        professional grade, and lower grade. The same goes for level of eyelash extension training.
Choosing your eyelash extension provider should be based on quality alone. Quality of products, portfolio,      and experience in the lash industry!

2.  Lash shed cycles can be affected by stress, hormones, diet, and medications

Your technician will have a rough outline of the average time their clients come in for fill appointments to      maintain lash fullness – but there are always those that break the mould! While the average client needs        to come every 3-4 weeks, there will also be those who can wait 6 weeks until they need a fill, and also          those who will need regular appointments at 2 week intervals. So many variables determine how fast            your natural lashes shed.  Changes in diet, medications, stress level, or hormones in the body can greatly        affect the lifespan of your eyelash extensions and can cause a surge in lash loss. Talk to your technician          about any changes in your shed pattern.

3.  Not everyone can pull off a “cat eye” shape

We know, we know – all the false lashes at Sephora are cat eye shaped so you want your lash extensions      to be too! Not everyone can pull off a cat eye shape with lash extensions, and on some people it looks            downright silly. Here’s why: Your natural lashes usually grow longest in the middle/mid outer area. From        there the lash lengths taper down in length towards the inner and outer eye where the natural lashes are      at their shortest. This means on most lash shapes, applying the longest extension length on the very              outer corners of the eye would be placing the longest/heaviest lash extensions on the smaller outer              natural lashes, which could cause the natural lash to droop/shed prematurely. Any drooping of the outer        eye will make eyes appear smaller, and give a funny looking low “winged” look.

4.  Lash Extensions will make natural lashes stronger, and healthier!

Think of the stress your natural lashes go through on a daily basis. Curled/Tugged/Yanked each                      morning to get them perky, coated in multiple coats of mascara, and Rubbed/Tugged each evening to get      mascara off (and that's if you don't pass out before taking off your make-up. Eeeek). Lash Extensions take      away the need for harsh manipulation of the lashes. Lash Extensions are perfectly curled (and stay that          way), richly dark, and super full. The only thing they require for maintenance is: brushing, gentle cleansing      (think, lash massage), and to baby them while you sleep by keeping them away from your pillow. Sounds        like heaven for those poor abused natural lashes! We often see client's lash health improve over 6-12              months of wearing lash extensions alone and ditching the invasive lash routine of mascara and                      curling.

Note: If you have ever experienced lash damage due to lash extensions, they were done incorrectly and          you should find a reputable lash provider who will take the time to apply appropriate length/thickness of        lash extensions for your lash health.

5. Time is Money

Lash extensions are an extremely specialized service and skill. It takes great patience and determination        to isolate each natural lash, pick up the extension, and apply it to the natural lash in the perfect direction.      Respect the art! Never show up to an appointment with eye make up or mascara on, or you’re only                hurting yourself! Each minute late, or spent taking off mascara takes away from lash application time and      will undoubtedly mean less lash extensions for you.

6. Product, Product, Product

No one would go get a $300 hair colour treatment and not invest in colour protection shampoo! Treat            lashes the same way! Most lash lounges have specialized aftercare product for you that is guaranteed            “extension safe” and will help safeguard and protect your lash extensions. This will also save you money        in the long run because the better you care for your lashes, the less often you need to come for fills!

7. Aftercare – Follow the rules!

Lash Extensionists are expertly trained to tell based on your shed cycle of lash extensions, how you are          caring for your lashes. Example: lash extensions completely gone from the outer corner of the eyes is            most likely a sleep issue (don’t grind them into the pillow!), while bits of lash adhesive left on the natural      lash but no extension is a sign of picking and rubbing of the lash extensions. Don’t lie to your technician        – be honest and let them form a plan for you to best upkeep your lush blinks!

8. You’re not Kim Kardashian

Yes, her lashes are great. So is her hair, and so are her…. Assets. We aren’t all as lucky. As a lash                    technician I can certainly give you a lash make-over and give you longer, fuller lashes or a variety of                enhancements with extensions alone. However, our canvas depends entirely on what your natural lashes        are like to begin with. Some women have only 40 lashes per eye while others (like Kim) have 175-225 per        eye. Your lash technician can certainly use tricks to give you as close to your dream lash look as possible –      but they should never jeopardize your lash health to get you there.    1

9. Lash Extensions May not be for you

Rough sleeper? Uncontrollable picker? Mascara Junkie? Lash extensions do require maintenance and                proper home care. If you’re not committed to taking excellent care of your lash extensions and insist on        rubbing, picking, and sleeping with your face buried in your pillow – skip lash extensions. They aren’t for        you.
